Q: There's a Mac-Modem cable made by Hayes, their cable number 07-00681. Can it be used with the NeXT computer? What are that cable's pin-outs?
A: No, the Hayes cable won't work on our computer with a modem. The pin-outs are:
MiniDIN-8 DB-25
1 4
2 5
3 2
4, 8 1, 7
5 3
Data Carrier Detect (DCD, Pin 8 on the DB-25 side) is critical to correct operation of the dial-up ports, ttyd[ab] and cu[ab]. It is not brought over to the computer. Data Terminal Ready (DTR, Pin 20 on the DB-25) is critical to detecting a lost connection; it, likewise, is not brought over to the computer.
